Improve Ewe Productivity Through Improved Nutrition
With on-farm labour costs rising, sheep producers of all types and sizes are looking for innovative ways to improve productivity and profits. One answer is to use an effective nutritional supplement prior to tupping.
By ensuring a ewe’s nutrient balance is absolutely right pre tupping, producers can increase conception at first service, and shorten the lambing period. Tighter lambing periods improve productivity and improve profits, according to Welsh producer John James.
Mr James has drenched his ewes routinely twice a year, initially a month before tupping and then a month prior to lambing. This year, John James got 95% of his lambing completed in just 17 days, and is convinced that tightening-up lambing of his 750 Welsh Mules has enabled significant cuts in labour costs and improvements in productivity at Moelcerni Farm, near Aberystwyth.
“I have achieved a significantly higher lambing percentage this year by using Farmers Choice Ovine Conditioner pre-tupping, and by applying a second application pre-lambing I’ve produced really thrifty lambs that got away very quickly,” he says. “The ewes have produced fantastic quality colostrum, and by getting the lambs suckling fast, I’ve prevented problems with diseases such as watery mouth.”
John James recognises that the period prior to tupping is a time of significantly high nutritional demand in the ewe, when even the best pasture cannot provide optimum nutrition. An organically chelated multi-nutrient drench such as Farmer’s Choice Ovine Conditioner can supplement your pre-tupping feeding regime to boost the rising plane of nutrition necessary to support fertility.
Micronutrients are essential for ewe fertility and vital for hormone development and foetal growth, but grass provides, on average, only 20% of a ewe’s Cobalt requirement and only 10% of its Selenium needs and the Autumn months do not provide the best quality grass. Therefore supplementing the ewe’s diet is essential for increasing lambing percentage and delivering thrifty lambs.
Ovine Conditioner can also be used all the way through the growing period to improve live weight gain and to get lambs to finishing weight earlier.
Tony Slinger, Cox Agri’s National Sales Manager, explains: “When choosing a nutritional supplement make sure you opt for one containing organically chelated trace elements, such as Farmer’s Choice Ovine Conditioner. It has a longer residual effect in the body, so vital elements are readily available at the time the animal needs them. In fact, the organic chelates in Farmers Choice Ovine Conditioner are four times more available than in products with inorganic chelates, whilst its nano technology delivers a smaller particle size for improved vitamin absorption,” he adds.
